UET was built in Mughalpura in 1921, a suburban area of Lahore, as Mughalpura Technical College. The name was changed to Maclagan Engineering College in 1932. At that stage, the institution offered courses of study in only two disciplines; Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. In 1932 the institution became affiliated with the University of the Punjab for awarding a bachelor's degree in Engineering. By the time of independence of Pakistan, it offered Bachelor of Science courses in electrical, mechanical and civil engineering.  A bachelor's degree program in Mining Engineering was also started in 1954. The name was again changed to West Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology in 1961. By the 1970s it had established over a score of master's degree courses in engineering, architecture, planning and allied disciplines. Ph.D. degree programs were also started. Today it is widely considered to be the best and the most popular engineering university of Pakistan with as many as 55,000 students applying every year.

Keeping in view the upcoming load shedding situation in the country, in 2004, the University
established its own Power Generation Unit with the capacity of 3 Mega Watts later
enhanced to 4 Mega Watts and became first and only one educational institution who has its
own Power Generation. To meet the growing demands for the Engineering graduates and
allied disciplines in the country, the University started an expansion program in the new millennium.
Consequently, the teaching and research capacity of the UET-Main was enhanced and the

establishment of the satellite campuses was taken up. At present, the University has three

satellite campuses; the Faisalabad Campus, the Kala-Shah-Kaku Campus, and the Rachna

College.
